Celtics Announce Hiring of C.M. Newton As Basketball Operations Consultant

Hey Celt,

The Boston Celtics announced today that legendary basketball coach and administrator C.M. Newton has been hired as a consultant to the Basketball Operations staff.

Newton, who will be inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame on October 13th for his outstanding contributions to the game of basketball, will serve as an advisor to the Basketball Operations staff as it analyzes collegiate talent for the upcoming draft. He will also be instrumental in assisting the staff with personnel decisions throughout the course of the season.

Newton's credentials in the sport of basketball are unsurpassed. After completing a collegiate career in which he played for coaching legends Adolf Rupp and Paul "Bear" Bryant at the University of Kentucky, Newton accepted the head basketball position at the University of Alabama in 1968. Over a 12-year period, Newton not only led the Crimson Tide to a string of conference championships, but also boldly instituted a racially integrated program at the southern school. He went onto serve as Assistant Commissioner of the SEC and then head coach of the Vanderbilt basketball program, where he concluded his college coaching career with 509 wins. In 1989, Newton was named Director of Athletics at the University of Kentucky, where one of his first moves was hiring current Celtics President and Head Coach Rick Pitino as the Wildcats men's basketball coach. Together, Newton and Pitino revitalized a program mired in controversy. The men's basketball team went on to win two national titles in the 1990's and reach three of the last four Final Four's.

Newton has also been a prominent figure in both the national and international game. He has served as a member of the NCAA Rules Committee, the NCAA Division I Basketball Committee, as well as Commissioner of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Committee. He served as Vice President of USA Basketball for eight years, overseeing the creation of the 1992 Olympic "Dream Team" as well as the growth of international women's basketball. In 1997, Newton received the John Bunn Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, recognizing his lifelong contributions to basketball.
