Boston Celtics to Honor Fluties as "Heroes Among Us"

On Friday, April 7th, the Boston Celtics will honor Doug and Laurie Flutie with the "Heroes Among Us" award for their efforts on behalf of those affected by autism.

To many football fans, Doug Flutie is a hero on the field.  Throughout his college and professional career, his name has been synonymous with success and perseverance.  It is Doug's off-the-field activities though that the Celtics will recognize this week.

The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism was established in 1998 by Doug and his wife, Laurie, to reflect their life-long commitment to making a difference in the lives of autistic children and their families.  The foundation is named in honor of their eight-year old son, who was diagnosed with autism at age three.

The goals of the Foundation include: providing funding for services for financially disadvantaged families who need assistance caring for their autistic child; funding research and education into the causes and consequences of childhood autism; and to serve as a clearing house and communications center for new and innovative programs and services developed for autistic children.

In just two years, the Foundation has raised over $1.8 million through fund-raisers, donations and sales of Flutie Flakes cereal.

For their tireless efforts on behalf of those affected by autism, the Boston Celtics are honored to have Doug and Laurie Flutie join the long list of distinguished Heroes.
