Well, they're ahead of Chicago at least....

No beast in East means wide-open race for

There are two perspectives from which to
view the power structure of the Eastern
   Conference.

There either aren't any real favorites, or
   there are too many. <snips>

   Wait 'til next year

NEW JERSEY: By the time Jayson Williams
finally returns, it will be too late to
make a difference. At least the Gheorghe
Muresan comeback will keep the fans
   interested.

ORLANDO: When Doc Rivers took the coaching
job, he had a contender. Now that the
roster has been stripped of its veteran
talent, he has a rebuilding job that could
   take years.

BOSTON Rick Pitino's constant tinkering has
killed continuity, not to mention reduced
the overall talent level. Can his return to
the college ranks be far away?

CHICAGO: With rookie Elton Brand at power
   forward, complemented by veterans Toni
Kukoc and Hersey Hawkins, the Bulls will be
better, but they're still a long way from
   contention.
