                                Voluntary workouts today for Celtics

By Michael Holley, Globe Staff, 01/11/99

In one week, the NBA officially will awaken from its six-month
lockout snooze. That's when the Celtics and other teams open their
training camps. But today marks the beginning of voluntary player workouts.
So for the first time since July 1, Celtics will be permitted to use their
regular facilities at Brandeis without worrying about violating a lockout
                                stipulation.

Several Celtics are expected to be in town today, getting a seven-day head
start on coach Rick Pitino's demanding camp. Ron Mercer and Walter McCarty
may be at Brandeis today; Antoine Walker is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. If
free agent Popeye Jones is there, that will be a good sign for the Celtics.
Word is that Boston is not the only team interested in having Jones on its
roster. The 6-foot-8-inch forward's former team, Dallas, may want to
reacquire him. And there also could be some interest from Seattle.

Retaining Jones is a Celtic priority for a couple of reasons. One is that he
is a legitimate rebounder. The other is that the Celtics don't have
significant amounts of salary-cap space to pursue another rebounder who can
contribute at a level that would make Pitino comfortable.
