Worcester Telegram's John Gearan Takes Pitino & Wallace To Task
And here's what the Telegram's feisty columnist had to say:

Same
would be true
for the
Celtics. Make
me the general
manager and
give that hoop
magazine
phony-baloney,
Chris Wallace,
the boot. Look
how he and
Little Ricky
have screwed
things up. They
treat players
like bubble-gum
trading cards.
Can they judge
talent? Yeah,
Travis Knight
is a
world-beater.
Sure, Chauncey
Billups is
tradeable. And
Kenny Anderson
is a leader.
How many times
have they been
dead wrong?
And to
whom do the
Celtics brain
trust listen?
Jersey Red, a
high school
cooking teacher
from Fall
River. And a
former lounge
bouncer, Leo
Papile, a
purveyor of
youth in AAU
ball. With his
ponytail
wagging, Papile
looks like a
hopeful from
Pitino's
stable.
Anyway, I know
hoops. I was
co-captain of
my high school
team, which is
more than
Wallace ever
was. I didn't
get bounced off
the team as did
Pitino at
UMass. I tell
the truth. I
could
comprehend that
Travis Knight
was not the
answer in the
middle, or
anywhere else.
You give me
half of
Wallace's
salary -- say,
$400,000 -- and
I'll bring the
Celtics their
17th NBA crown.
You
would need to
give me five
years, of
course, to
develop bench
strength and
hustling
players, top to
bottom. That's
all -- five
years, half of
what Pitino is
getting -- and
I'll promise
we'd be dancing
on the old
parquet at the
FleetCenter.
