Sprewell followup
Today's Los Angeles Daily Journal (newspaper of necessity for local legal
types) notes that U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker has slapped $153,654 in
sanctions against Latrell Sprewell's lawyers for pursuing "baseless claims"
against the Warriors and the NBA.
For those who don't know or care much about the legal system, sanctions
aren't rare, but sanctions of this magnitude against the lawyers are very
rare. Usually it is the litigant who is socked. This is a very loud and
strong statement from the court.
The sanctions consist of all fees paid by the league and the team, plus
$5,000 for "wasting court time and resources." (quotes are from the article,
not necessarily the ruling itself.)
