Yes, you have to be on the list to receive mail, however you can forward
mail from where you originally subscribed to a new address.

Say I registered as pmm@foo.com.  I then move to paul@bar.com, but get the
nice folks at foo.com to forward my e-mail to my new address.  If I then set
up and autoreply from paul@bar.com that goes to list posters, the list
maintainer has no easy way of making the tie from pmm@foo.com to
paul@bar.com to unsubscribe the offending address.
