Interesting and very relevant stuff from this mornings Globe:

"The Celtics are actively scouting four NBA free agents, three of whom are big men. The guy they'd love to get is Matt Geiger, who grew up in the Andover/Tewksbury area and whose mom would love to see return to New England. (We're told there's a Geiger Wall of Fame at an Appleby's restaurant in Tewksbury.) Geiger's agent is the ubiquitous Falk, who hints that the $5 million the Celtics may have on July 1 (assuming they can't dump anyone) is not quite going to cut it. If they could move, say, Travis Knight for a pick, that might help close the deal. The other big men Boston might be watching are Ike Austin, who probably is too expensive, and Michael Stewart, who would be terrific in Pitino's system and would come cheaper but probably is going to stay in Sacramento, where he's almost a cult hero.

The Celtics could also renew phone contact with Toronto in their search for height. Marcus Camby is not happy up there - is anyone? - and the Raptors may feel compelled to Stoudamire him to get something in return ... "

2nd Item for the fun of it:

"Bird, as a 1985 cover boy, was invited to dine with Mikhail Gorbachev, George Bush, and the other movers and shakers at last week's 75th anniversary party for Time magazine. Alas, his Pacers were busy dissecting the Grizzlies that night in Vancouver, so Bird sent his regrets. But he's not one for those kinds of shindigs anyway. When Time called Bird's agent, the late Bob Woolf, to request a cover shoot for the 1985 issue in question (which had Bird and Wayne Gretzky together under the headline, ''Simply The Best,'') the request went nowhere. As the story goes, Woolf called Bird at home and was told that Bird was sleeping. Woolf said that this was important and that Bird had to be woken up. Bird got to the phone and Woolf tried the end-around approach. ''Larry, Life magazine wants you for a cover shoot? Are you interested?'' The answer: no. ''Larry, Harvard University wants you as their commencement speaker. Are you interested?'' The answer: no. ''Larry, Time magazine wants you for a cover shoot. Are you interested.?'' The answer: no. And, finally from Bird: ''Mr. Woolf, I thought you said this was important.'' So there was a drawing on the cover

Interesting to see Volk going to the Nuggets, to try to help out.
