Leo Papile On The Draft, Etc.

Celtics chief scout Leo Papile was on 790 AM - The Score - in Providence, RI,
at 6 PM this evening for an interview with Scott Cordishe and his occasional
sidekick -- main Pitino Butt Boy -- Jersey Red. Here's a couple of things that
the ever loquacious Papile said:

Pat Garrity

Will go somewhere between No. 10 and No. 15; clubs are a little unsure what
position he'll play, but he can shoot and he's very solid/strong.

Michael Doleac

Had a terrific Celtics workout, but a player "'very successful in a Bulls/Utah
situation... he's like a Joe Kleine... little more athletic...'" He also said,
and I'm paraphrasing quite often here: A player that will grow on you. But
obviously, Papile's comments about Doleac fitting into half-court/slow down
teams like the above two, means there's no chance in Hell that the C's will
draft him. Or is it just the usual double-speak?

Antawn Jamison

"'... he's got the heart of Paul Silas...'" Papile did however question his
shooting range, and whether he would be a big scorer in the Pros; but he also
said Jamison was very quick to the ball.

Robert Traylor

Long gone before the Celtics pick; he'll have a "'enormously successful, long-
term... all star career...'" Papile was very high on Tractor. He said
something like he was a robust young man, nothing like Oliver Miller. Said he
also had a "'run-in'" with Traylor a few years back, as the Tractor as a senior
was abusing a couple of his sophomore players at the BABC during a game. Also
noted Traylor was the "'Real McCoy'".

On The Draft

"'I think this is a pretty good draft.'" He said, that he saw "'twenty-five
players'" at Chicago who could find a place in the NBA.

On Keon Clark

Raved about him; phenomenal workouts; thought he could possibly be gone before
Boston picks, but if he isn't, Papile notes: "'If he's on the board there,
we'll look at...'" taking him.

On What The Celtics Need

Someone who can come in and start in the front court. He really emphasized the
need for a Center or Small Forward, but it must be someone who can immediately
contribute. He seemed to rule out both the high school kids (sorry Usenet
Draft) and any foreign players who are a year away: "'It's got to be a guy
whose going to play for us this year...'" Said the back court was
contractually settled; both guys are going to be there for awhile.

On Trades

Lots of trades are possible, because whom may be the first pick, has yet to be
decided. There are three candidates: Bibby, Olowokandi, and Pierce. There may
be a lot of trading up, but there's also the possibility that if the right
player isn't there, a team could trade down.

A Celtics Trade?

Nothing of a specific nature, but he said it was a possibility.
