Gene, that's right on the money. The agents, especially David Falk, are
ruining the game. Hopefully the collective bargaining agreement will be
reworked this summer to reduce their power. There should be a cap on
individual salaries based upon the team salary cap and the number of years of
experience that a player has. For example a third year free agent (like
Walker) can only make 40% of the team salary cap. That way there is a limit,
but it would go up proportionally to league revenue. The maximum individual
salary could have a 5% notch per year. (So a fourth year free agent could
make 45% of the team cap, and a player wouldn't reach 100% of the team cap
until after his 15th season.)

Everyone, beginning with his agent. When this swirl of thinking clouds
the minds of our young, immature "stars," they have lost the focus of
basketball, they will not be champions, and certainly not Celtics. The key
to this focus is sacrifice, I think, and I think easy and unearned riches are
not conducive to sacrifice. Well-paid is one thing; filthy rich is another.
It
clouds the mind, deludes the focus, produces spoilation."
