The Globe sportswriters sneer at hard-core fans, regularly calling them
"get-a-lifers.'' Guys like Shaughnessy cynically cover sports as
entertainment. Of course, the intense sports interest makes it possible
for him to make a good salary at the Globe, plus regular gigs on sports
radio and TV shows in the Boston market. 

Meanwhile, people who read Bill Cooper's game summaries last year were
more informed about the team and players than Globe readers. Kind of
funny, isn't it?
