Summer Shootout Summary



Using an assortment of internet and local media reports, I compiled
the following information and statistics concerning the recently
completed 1997 Atlanta Summer Shootout. 


Thursday, July 10, 1997
GAME #1: Cleveland 85, Boston 75

The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Boston Celtics 85-75 Thursday
night at Life University in Marietta, Ga. The game was played for 40
minutes, rather than the NBA normal of 48 minutes ... After being 
outscored 18-14 in the first quarter, the Cavs came back in the 
second to outscore Boston, 29-25, forcing a 43-all tie at the half ... 
Cleveland sealed the victory by outscoring the Celtics in the second 
half, 42-32 ... The Cavaliers outrebounded the Celtics 37-20 ...

Shawnelle Scott shoot 6-7 from the field to led the Cavs with a game-
high 16 points ... Vitaly Potapenko followed with 15, while Zydrunas 
Ilgauskas (7'3" C from Lithuania) scored 13 points and grabbed 10 
rebounds and 3 blocked shots ... Ron Riley added 12 points in the 
win ... Derek Anderson (right knee) and Brevin Knight (left ankle)
did not play due to injury ...

The Celtics were led by Eric Williams' 15 points in 32 minutes of 
play ... Dana Barros followed with 14, while Eric Murdock tallied 11 
... Ron Mercer played 20 minutes and scored 10 points ...  Danya 
Abrams played 16 minutes, while committing 5 fouls and scoring only 
4 points ...  Greg Minor played 27 minutes and did not score on 0-2 
shooting ... Chauncey Billups did not play due to injury ...

GAME #2: Indiana 73, Boston 101

The Boston Celtics defeated the Indiana Pacers 101-73 at the Life 
University in Marietta, GA ...  The Celtics led at the end of the first half, 
43-31 ... Although Indiana outscored the Celtics 26-25 in the third 
quarter, the Celtics still owned a 68-57 lead ...  The Celtics put the 
game of reach in the final quarter by outscoring the Pacers 33-16 ... 
The Celtics placed six players in double fugures ... The Pacers 
committed 24 turnovers, chiefly due to Boston's full-court pressure and 
the shortage of Indiana ballhandlers ... Indiana's first round pick, Austin
Croshere struggled in his first appearance as a professional ...

Indiana was lead by Mark Pope's 17 points and 10 rebounds, although 
he committed 6 turnovers...  Walter followed with 14 points (four third-
quarter 3-pointers) ... Davin Ham added 11 points.  Alonzo Goldston 
scored 11 points off the bench ... Chris Jent and Chris Garner 
combined to hit 4 of 15 shots and committed 8 turnovers ... Austin 
Croshere played 24 minutes and hit 2 of 4 shots for 4 points;  he also 
had 2 assists, no rebounds, and 2 turnovers ... Fred Hoiberg (pulled 
thigh muscle), Jo Jo English (pulled hamstring), Mike Penberthy 
(pulled hamstring), and Etdrick Bohannon (severe foot blister) did 
not play ...

Eric Williams led the Celtics with 20 points, hitting 7 of 10 shots ... 
Ron Mercier (on 3 of 10 shots) and Eric Murdock each finished with 
13 points for the Celtics ... Brent Scott (7 rebounds in 21 minutes) 
and Rumeal Robinson scored 12 points apiece off the bench ... 
Travis Williams added 11 points in the win ...

GAME #3: Atlanta 78, Boston 107

The Boston Celtics defeated the Atlanta Hawks 107-78 Saturday at 
Life University in Marietta, GA ... The Hawks committed 27 turnovers 
... Seven Celtics players scored in double figures ...

The Hawks were lead by top draft pick Ed Gray, who scored 19 
points with 5 rebounds and 2 assists in 32 minutes ... Second 
round pick Chris Crwaford also scored 19 points for the Hawks ...

Travis Williams scored 14 points in 28 minutes ... Ron Mercier 
added 12 points and 4 rebounds in 27 minutes ... Eric Murdock 
scored 13 points and Eric Williams 12 points for the Celtics ...
